YOUR TRUSTED ARCHITECTS IN CORNWALL
A journey through Cornwall's rich history
OUR CONNECTION TO CORNWALL
Cornwall isn’t just where we work; it’s woven into who we are. For Daisy and Adam, the owners of Marraum, Cornwall became their home at a young age when both of their families moved to this beautiful county when they were about three years old. They grew up on Cornwall's shores, explored its rugged landscapes, and fell in love with its unique character.
From their early years in village primary schools to their shared experiences at secondary school in Truro. Adam and Daisy’s friendship grew throughout their time at Truro College. After college, Adam stayed in Cornwall to study Sustainable Construction, while Daisy pursued Fine Art in London. However, the draw of Cornwall’s coastlines and the desire to come home soon won out.
Shortly after Daisy returned from university, they took on their first project together: a full-scale refurbishment of a townhouse in Redruth. This experience ignited their love for transforming spaces, as well as a deep understanding of the reality of a building project. Their success in Redruth led them to their second major renovation in Falmouth — a project that was especially meaningful as it marked the start of their family life.
Today, Adam and Daisy live in Falmouth, where the sea is never far away, and daily walks to Penryn — where their office is based — remind them of the beauty of living and working in Cornwall running an architects practice. Their story isn’t just about architecture; it’s about creating homes that reflect Cornwall’s soul while meeting the needs of modern life. Through Marraum, they channel their connection to the county into every project, creating spaces that are as rooted in Cornwall as they are.

CORNWALL'S ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY
Cornwall’s architecture is as diverse and captivating as its natural landscape. From mediaeval castles to modern eco-conscious homes, each building tells a story about the county's past while hinting at its future. As architects in Cornwall, we appreciate this rich architectural heritage and marvel at its evolution.
Mediaeval architecture
Cornwall's architectural journey starts in the mediaeval era, where the dominant structures were castles and churches built to last centuries. St. Mary's Church in Truro, was a brilliant example of Gothic design, which was later incorporated into Truro Cathedral. Built from local stone, these ancient structures reflect the communities' strong ties to their land and faith.
Georgian and Victorian expansion
Fast forward to the Georgian and Victorian periods, and you see Cornwall’s growth, fuelled by mining wealth. The affluent mining industry brought with it elegant architecture, particularly in towns like Redruth. Georgian townhouses and Victorian villas became symbols of prosperity, featuring classical columns, grand staircases, and high ceilings that reflected the ambitions of their owners. In contrast to these three were the wall-to-wall miner's cottages in areas such as Carharrack when demand soared in the early 19th century due to the reopening of the Consolidated Mines.
Lemon Street in Truro is a perfect example of this era's architectural influence, showcasing the balance and beauty of Georgian design. Meanwhile, the grand Alverton Manor Hotel, once a convent, stands as a stunning example of Georgian and late 19th century craftsmanship, with its pointed arches and intricate stonework. This period transformed Cornwall from a rural stronghold to a flourishing centre of commerce and culture.
Gothic revival
Truro Cathedral, completed in the early 20th century, represents Cornwall’s embrace of the Gothic Revival movement. Built from local granite, it’s a structure that towers above the city, blending mediaeval influences with modern design sensibilities. The cathedral’s intricate stone carvings, expansive stained-glass windows, and towering spires remind us of Cornwall’s enduring commitment to both tradition and innovation.
Modernism and mid-century minimalism
As the 20th century progressed, Cornwall’s architectural styles evolved with the times. During the mid-century, modernist influences began to reshape the county, bringing clean lines, functional spaces, and a focus on the future. The Art Deco Plaza Cinema in Truro is one of the few examples of this style still standing in Cornwall today, with its bold, geometric forms and sleek aesthetics.
Cornwall’s connection to its natural surroundings also started to play a more prominent role in design. Architects began incorporating larger windows, outdoor living spaces, and eco-conscious materials into their plans, reflecting a growing desire to harmonise with the environment.
21st century - a blend of tradition and innovation
Today, Cornwall’s architecture is a harmonious mix of the past and the present. Marraum’s Cornwall architects have played a part in this evolution, designing spaces that honour the county’s architectural heritage while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
In residential architecture, you can see this blend everywhere — from solar panels on centuries-old cottages to new builds that prioritise energy efficiency without sacrificing aesthetic beauty. This balance of tradition and innovation is what makes Cornwall’s architecture so distinctive.
As you explore the streets of Falmouth, Truro and beyond, you’ll notice how Cornwall’s architectural landscape tells a story of resilience, creativity, and a deep connection to the land. From mediaeval fortresses to cutting-edge eco homes, Cornwall is a place where history and modernity coexist in the most beautiful way. Marraum is proud to be part of this legacy, crafting spaces that look forward while remaining rooted in Cornwall’s architectural history.
